Omega in the community with meals

Brothers of the local nu iota graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity donated over 150 items of food to Meals on Wheels on Monday this week.

Anthony Parrish, Basileus of Nu Iota Chapter, said that the group decided to hold a food drive to donate to Meals on Wheels at it’s last meeting.?

“We knew that now, with everything that is going on, it is important for us to help support the community as much as we can,” Parrish said.

He explained that this is one of the groups many service projects, but that given the current outbreak of the COVID-19 virus making sure community members are fed is a top priority.

Parrish said that the food donations came from brothers in the Marshall, Hallsville and Longview chapters of the fraternity.

The groups collected and donated the nonperishable goods to Meals on Wheels to be used to help feed local community members.

Deon Hall, the Social Action Committee Chairman, said that this is just one way of many the non profit organization works to support the community.

The group gives out four scholarships annually to local young men headed for college, according to East Texas Area Intake Chairman Louis Tennison. He said that to support this scholarship the group holds an annual Pancake Supper Fundraiser.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 the organization had to reschedule this year’s pancake supper, and will later announce the new date, that will likely be in the fall.

Tennison said that the annual event is usually held at the Marshall Civic Center and is an all you can eat dinner that also includes bingo, door prizes and a TV give away.

Reginald M. Harris, Seventh District representative for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. , has seen the toll mental illness and other health issues have taken on the Black community.

The fraternity, which has 750 chapters in the United States and 14 other countries, has also partnered with the American Diabetes Association because diabetes continues to plague the Black community . African American adults are 60 percent more likely than non-Hispanic White adults to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a physician, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health. ”I am a type 2 diabetic, and I understand that we need to get that information out,” Harris said. “We share information on how to avoid diabetes with healthy eating and exercise, how to treat it if you have it, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Mental health is the cornerstone of the partnership, said the fraternity’s Grand Basileus David Marion, a psychologist who practices in Jackson, Mississippi. As a trained clinician, Marion has seen the impact of mental illness on the Black community. The fraternity has a solid background in programming that targets mental health. d.

National Achievement Week

Nu Iota and Theta chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. recently celebrated National Achievement Week with their families at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. Several citizens were recognized during the celebration. Larry Hygh Sr. presented Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Judge Clarice Watkins with a plaque for Nu Iota Omega Citizen of the Year. The Nu Iota Omega Man of the Year, Louis Tennison III, was presented a plaque by Robert Knox. Tennison also serves as president or basileus for the chapter. Theta Omega Man of the Year was Vontrez Tillman. Bro. Wendall Smith was the speaker for the occasion.
